We are a collection of three families who love to paddle together.

We are kids, parents and grandparents with a passion for experiencing the watery wild together, as an antidote to Nature Deficit Disorder and for just plain fun.

We'll share our love of family paddling here, in the hope of helping others experience the joy of togetherness at
the pace of the paddle. Enjoy!

Burrows Island

Here's another local western Washington destination that we like a lot. The put-in is at the western edge of the town of Anacortes, south of the San Juan Island ferry terminal. This trip has the feel of the San Juans but it's very accessible. But remember, this is a salt water trip - the water is cold and there are currents. Between the put-in and Burrows Island there is a current that can run fairly fast - keep your wits about you in the wind.

There's a campsite with about 5 spaces for tents on the east side of the island and an old lighthouse on the west side. On a sunny day the lighthouse is a great place to have lunch and watch the porpoises in Rosario Strait. Great spot for kids to play.

  1. Will the tides affect the paddle out to Burrows?

  2. Sally: Yes, the currents can run swiftly around burrows at both flood and ebb. Between the NE tip of Burrows and the beach on the north there is a current to consider. For beginners it's a good idea to time your crossing with the slack.
